Yes, there are 48 pecans most commonly grown in Texas!

We may be missing a couple one-off varieties on our board but we do have all of the most commonly grown pecans in Texas shown for you to see. You are more than welcome to bring a pecan from your house or your Grandma’s or Aunt and Uncle’s house to match up to our examples. We don’t mind a bit and it might be fun to try to do.

Pecan trees will begin to leaf out and put on catkins (male) and cups (female) in mid to late spring of each year. As the catkins and cups begin to fade out, if properly fertilized, the pecan nut starts to develop. Over the summer and into the fall you will see the nuts (covered in a green protective outer shell which is called a calyx) begin to grow larger and the protective outer shell will go from a bright spring green that looks slightly spongey to a dark brown that turns hard and begins to crack open on the end. When the outer husk is fully opened it is easy for you to see the pecans. Depending on the cultivar of tree you have and if they are pollinated, fertilized and properly cultivated, your pecans should be ready for harvest in about 7 months.

A “harvest year” does not follow a calendar year. If you harvest your pecans in November of one year and are then selling them in February of the next year you are selling “this year’s harvest”. Your next year’s harvest would begin when your trees start to leaf out in the Spring, put on catkins and cups and turns into nutlets to grow.
